Updates About This Year’s Tax Bills
New Fire Fee Rates Applied
If your fire department requested a change to its fire fee rates for the current fiscal year, then your new fire fee rate will be applied on your 2026 tax bill.
Brunswick County is unique in that it is the only county in North Carolina that actively uses a fire fee system rather than issuing a fire tax. The amount of fire fees a department can charge a property annually is regulated by the North Carolina General Statutes (Session Law 2017-60) and has a set cap on the maximum amount a department can charge.
In April 2026, representatives from the local fire departments requested an amendment from local state legislators to allow them to raise their fire fee cap limits to help address critical funding needs for the departments. On July 7, 2026, Governor Josh Stein signed the latest State Budget into law, which included this necessary amendment. The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing and then approved the fire departments’ requested fire fees on Monday, Aug. 3.
Fire fees are not based on the tax value of a property. Fire fees for improved properties (with buildings) are calculated based on the heated square footage of a building. Fire fees for vacant land are calculated based on the acreage of the property.
For questions about your fire fee rate, you are encouraged to contact the fire department that services your property to learn more.
Oak Island Property Owners Now Receive One Combined Tax Bill
Beginning with the 2026 tax bills, property owners within the municipal limits of the Town of Oak Island will now receive one tax bill directly from Brunswick County that will include both their County and Town of Oak Island taxes and/or applicable fees. Previously, property owners in Oak Island received two separate tax bills from the County and the Town of Oak Island.
Property owners will pay their total bill amount to the Brunswick County Tax Office, and the County will remit your municipal portion to the Town. Questions about your municipal tax rate and/or fees should still be directed to the Town of Oak Island.

Who Do I Contact About My Tax Rate(s) or Fire Fees?
Brunswick County is responsible for the collection of taxes for the following municipalities, but questions about the municipal tax rates should be directed to the town/city.
Taxpayers in these areas receive one combined bill (County and Municipality): Bald Head Island, Belville, Boiling Spring Lakes, Bolivia, Calabash, Carolina Shores, Caswell Beach, Leland, Navassa, Northwest, Oak Island (NEW as of 2026), Sandy Creek, Shallotte, Southport, St. James, Sunset Beach, Varnamtown.
Brunswick County DOES NOT collect for the towns of Holden Beach or Ocean Isle Beach.
Note: Some municipalities with fire departments may also use property taxes to help fund their fire department’s operations along with fire fee collections. You are encouraged to inquire with your municipality for any questions about their fire department’s operations and expenditures.
