Brunswick County to illuminate Courthouse green for Operation Green Light for Veterans Nov. 4-11
MEDIA RELEASE
BOLIVIA, N.C. – In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Brunswick County has announced plans to illuminate the Judge Ola M. Lewis Brunswick County Courthouse and the Charters of Freedom settings green from Nov. 4-11 as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort uniting counties to support military veterans.
The initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), raises awareness around the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.
“We cannot thank our active and retired service members enough for what they have done for our country,” Chairman Mike Forte said. “We are proud to have celebrated Operation Green Light every year since its inception. Our goal is to not only recognize our community’s veterans and their families but also to highlight the services and support available to them through the County’s veterans services office.”
Brunswick County is home to 14,452 veterans as of 2026, ranking tenth in total number of veterans among all 100 North Carolina counties. This means about 7.8% of Brunswick County residents are military veterans, which also makes it one of the counties with the highest concentration of service members.
Now in its sixth year, Operation Green Light is spearheaded by NACo and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO), building upon successful efforts by the New York State Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association in 2021. In 2025, 412 counties across 44 states participated in Operation Green Light.
Residents, businesses, and other organizations across Brunswick County are encouraged to participate by changing one light bulb in their house or business to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported.
Those that wish to participate are encouraged to check their local hardware and general stores or online retailers for green bulbs and materials. Residents and businesses can share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
"A green light is a small thing. But when thousands of counties and partners turn one on together each November, it becomes something larger,” NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase said. “Operation Green Light for Veterans is a powerful signal that we see our veterans, we remember their service, and we owe them more than a thank you once a year. Their sacrifice didn't end at discharge. Our gratitude shouldn't either."
Brunswick County will illuminate the Courthouse (310 Government Center Drive in Bolivia) and the Charters of Freedom settings in front of the building with green lights from dusk to dawn beginning Wednesday. Nov. 4 through Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
The Board of Commissioners also adopted a resolution supporting Operation Green Light for Veterans. County offices and libraries will be closed Nov. 11 to observe Veterans Day.
